Transportation

There are many companies which offer transportation services to transport your classic car from the seller (point "A") and deliver it to you (point "B") via many different methods. Auto Transportation companies usually can offer you two-ways to get your car to you. The transportation company delivers it on an 'open' (exposed to weather elements and road debris) car carrier or they transport it inside an "enclosed" trailer. The decision to transport using an open or enclosed trailer is, normally, based on the value and condition of the car. Usually the 'enclosed' trailer is more expensive, but it's also safer. There is another option available to transport your classic car that is sometimes used, and that is to pay someone to physically drive the car to you. As for the "how" your car is transported is as important as to how the transportation company plans to get it to you. Most transportation companies' direct ship the car for point "A" to point "B" utilizing only one carrier-they use their own company transporters. However, some companies may use a form of dispatch to get your vehicle to you. A dispatch company will usually go on to a network of transportation companies to route your vehicle to your final destination. In other words, more then one company touches your car-who's liable for any damage. Always ask the transportation company exactly how they will ship your car, verify what insurance the company has, and how damage claims are handled. Furthermore, insure your car is fully covered, either buy the transportation company or purchase your own insurance for the transport.

Prior to the transportation company taking the car make sure a pre-shipping inspection is completed, and get a copy of this inspection-as soon as possible. If any damage is noted, ask the transportation company to photograph the damage and forward you the photos. It would be a very good idea for you to be there for this inspection. If you can not be there for this inspection, it is suggested you hire a third-party inspection company (check out our inspection company links), especially, if the car is a high priced vehicle.

As for cost; prices for moving vehicles across the United States and abroad can vary a lot. Another important factor about cost for shipping; is your car running or not? You will be asked this up-front. If the car is not running, or problems occur during shipping, you may be in for a surcharge. Ask.

The bottom line is to make sure you ask questions. If your car's value isn't too high and the car needs some minor body repair, you may want to go for a cheaper method. However, if your car is high in value, monetary or personally, spend the extra bucks and either take out an insurance policy that covers any and all damage to the car during transit, or use one of the companies that have their own trucks, a proven transportation reputation amongst classic car enthusiast (ask others), and they are willing and able to pay you for any damage to the car caused while in transit to you.
